The Octavia E. Butler Magnet Glee Club is a semi-select, auditioned singing ensemble.
It was founded by director, Cynthia Abbott, in 1987, who is in her 33rd year teaching music at Washington Middle School.
The sixty-member group has been selected to perform at Disneyland for the past 20 years. They also enjoy participating in many local holiday performances in the Pasadena area for organizations such as the College Women’s Club, the Retired Teachers Association, the Council of Women's Clubs, Scripps Home, American Association of University Women, and Republican Women Federated.
Over the years, OEB's Glee Club has been invited to perform for many special events and places through the years, including Crowning of the Rose Queen with Maureen McGovern, the Super Bowl Halftime Show at the Rose Bowl with Michael Jackson, The Burbank Airport, Indymac Bank, IBM, and Pasadena and Altadena Heritage. One of the highlights of the year, is the Broadway Show, with full sets, costumes, lighting and sound. The students work with professional directors and choreographers. Recently, they have performed Shrek, The Wiz, Grease, Guys and Dolls, Thoroughly Modern Millie, 42nd Street, Once On This Island, and Anything Goes.
