The Octavia E. Butler Magnet Glee Club is a semi-selective, auditioned singing ensemble founded by director Cynthia Abbott in 1987.
The 70-member group has been selected to perform at Disneyland for the past two decades. Members also participate in numerous holiday performances throughout the Pasadena area for organizations such as the College Women’s Club, the Retired Teachers Association, the Council of Women’s Clubs, Scripps Home, the American Association of University Women, and the Republican Women Federated. The ensemble also performs annually at Pasadena Unified School District’s No Boundaries event and the Pasadena Showcase House of Design, providing students with opportunities to share their talents and represent OEB throughout the greater Pasadena community.
Over the years, OEB’s Glee Club has been invited to perform at many special events and venues, including the Crowning of the Rose Queen with Maureen McGovern, the halftime show of Super Bowl XXVII with Michael Jackson, as well as events for Hollywood Burbank Airport, IBM, Pasadena Heritage, and Altadena Heritage.
One of the highlights of the year is the spring musical, featuring full sets, costumes, lighting, and sound. Students work alongside professional directors and choreographers to bring each production to life. Recent productions include The Little Mermaid, Newsies, and Alice in Wonderland.
