While Octavia E. Butler is a renowned science fiction writer, she is also known for being an avid reader. She spent most of her free time at the library throughout her life, reading books for her own enjoyment and also to do the research needed to ground her novels in authenticity.

We also know that it is one of the best ways to increase empathy as we are able to immerse ourselves in someone else's point of view. At the Octavia E. Butler Library, we invest in a collection of books that gets students excited about reading, and we strive to build a collection that all of our students can get lost in.
